Radiographs (X-Rays)

At Camp Smile Pediatric Dentistry, we are committed to ensuring each patient receives a customized clinical and radiographic examination. This commitment includes following the guidelines of the American Dental Association (ADA) and the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) when prescribing and obtaining dental radiographs.

Radiographs (x-rays) enable our team to assess development of your child’s dentition and check for any missing, extra, or poorly positioned teeth. Additionally, we are able to monitor timing of orthodontic therapy and check for the development of third molars (wisdom teeth).

While we can visualize cavities on the biting or chewing surfaces of teeth without x-rays, we must rely on bitewing (posterior) radiographs to check for cavities between tight contacts. Additionally, just as x-rays often are used to rule out possible bone fractures after falls at sporting events and gymnastics, dentists must rely on radiographs to check for tooth and/or root fractures and other pathology.

When radiographs are indicated, you can be assured that our team will be good stewards of technology and abide by the principle of ALARA, or As Low As Reasonably Achievable.
